Kevin Conroy from Redeemer skipped the winning triple in the International Open on Sunday. Playing with Marty Trainor (Lead) and Alan Paul (2nd), they finished runner-up in the group stages to Raymond Stubbs. In the last 16 they faced an Alan Loughlins triple which they put away with ease. The quarter-final was anything but easy ,where Kevin was once again drawn against his old rival Steve Williams from Wales. Kevin had previously lost to Steve in the final of the World Singles and twice on Saturday in the main event and plate. This was a nailbiting match that could have gone either way ,but with two great bowls from Alan and one from Kevin, Steve was unable to respond. In the semi's they were drawn against another Irish triple Eddie Curran, John Quinn and Mark Beattie. Kevin's triple was playing some wonderful shots and picked up 7 shots to no reply. In the end they ran out comfortable winners 11-7. The final was a battle between old foes England v Ireland (Grant Soeller v Kevin Conroy). Kevin raced into a 6-0 lead after 4 ends but the english trip responded with 2 counts of 2. Kevin again put extreme pressure on the English triple racing into an 11-4 lead. It looked dead and burried for the english until they suddenly picked up 4 shots in the 9th end. Kevin played a wonder shot under extreme pressure to claim victory. For anyone interested in playing next year it was a fantastic event run better then any tournament I have witnessed. Congratulations to all and I hope it goes from strength to strength. |
