Oriel Zone created history on Saturday the 30th of January when they won the Junior Zone title for the 4th time. They also created another bit of history that will be very difficult to replicate. They went through the whole competition without losing a single mat. It was incredible.
After beating East Antrim, South Tyrone and Mid Antrim comfortably Oriel knew that if they hit top form they were the team to beat. In the semi-final they were drawn against Foyle. Oriel made no-changes to the team and no positional changes either

Jason's rink began extremely well picking up counts from all angles racing into a 14-2 lead. His whole rink was playing extremely well with Dean burying jacks from all angles at 2nd. He lost a few shots in the last couple of end but in truth the game was over as a contest long before that. Niall on the other hand was struggling with his own game for the first few ends but once he started to play well nobody could stop him. Niall as 2nd was getting touchers from every angle and Philip was his usual impeccable best. After 4 ends Niall was 4-3 down but suddenly he picked up count after count and cruise home to a 16-4 win. Calum on the other hand was having a ding-dong battle with J Austen from Foyle. Calum was playing sensational bowls just to keep them in the match and eventually his skill paid off when he won the last few ends to win 7-5.

Western just beat Larne in the semi final which setup a final between the most successful junior zone teams of all time with Western having two wins and Oriel with three.
Oriel began the brighter with Jason's rink playing some wonderful bowls taking a 10-4 lead. Calum was again showing his unbelievable talent by keeping his game to a draw at 4-4. Nearly every time he came in shot was against him. Niall on the other hand continued where he left off and took a 6-2 lead.
All of a sudden the game was turned upside down when Jason dropped 7 shots which took Western within 4 shots. Calum however steadied the ship by picking up 2 shots. Jason showed great character and picked up 2 and Niall picked up 2 to take the overall to double figures. Calum was in sensational form and in the end won 7-5 but could have easily been beaten very badly. Niall eventually won 9-6 and Jason never dropped a shot after dropping the 7.

It was an incredible performance and showed that Oriel could have another great junior team. Many are on the men’s team already and on that performance many more could also perform well on it. Every player played well with both Amy and Shawna playing great lead bowls as well as Rowan. If they continue to progress and play more tournaments this team could be very hard to beat.
