Oriel knew going into the match that anything less then a remarkable improvement in the 1st half could see us being dumped out of the Boomer Cup at the 2nd hurdle. Many changes were made to it, Stephen McMahon was moved down to 3rd to Billy Taaffe and the returning Conor Mackin was put straight in as skip, with Paul Duff 3rd. Could these changes improve the performance or were they fighting a loss cause? Only time would tell.

On Sunday the 23rd of November 2009 Gerry McCabe became the first person from Oriel Zone to win a British Isles Individual Title. After last year’s heroics of winning the National Singles and runner-up in the National Rinks, Gerry continued his phenomenal form in Llandrindod Wells, Wales by outplaying his counterparts from England, Scotland, Isle of Man and Wales. Paul Duff was involved also in the winning Irish International team. Paul became only the 2nd player from Oriel to represent the International team.

Oriel has a proud history in the National Juniors since our foundation in 1995, with Gerry McCabe and Diarmuid McMahon reaching the final in the 90's and Connor Mackin winning in 2002. Oriel has always been competitive in the Junior Zone and this year is no exception with them cruising into the semis.

Whitecross is always one of the largest triples tournaments in the zone, if not Ireland. Every year there is always some magnificent matches and this was no exception. There were some outstanding trips through to final such as skips for Oriel, John Murnaghan and Connor Mackin, skip for Mid-Ulster Sean Quinn, former Irish skip Dessie Hamilton, form player Sean Conroy Snr and the holders Michael Hand. To win this tournament you will have to be at the top of your game and then some. With ten through we needed two preliminary rounds.

Preliminary Rounds
Very few upsets occurred in the preliminary rounds or even big ties but definitely the tie of the round was Gill and Vera Mohan. It was a great game of bowls throughout with Gill eventually taking the tie by 2shots. Michelle Martin was involved in a tough stater, struggling to overcome Minima from Lordship, eventually winning in a tied end.
