Oriel has a proud history in the National Juniors since our foundation in 1995, with Gerry McCabe and Diarmuid McMahon reaching the final in the 90's and Connor Mackin winning in 2002. Oriel has always been competitive in the Junior Zone and this year is no exception with them cruising into the semis.

Hopes were high that the title could once again return to Oriel. Firstly, however, were the qualifiers for Ballymoney. With players such as the Hands, Dean McDonagh, Philip Mackin and Calum Cummiskey we were always in for an entertaining nights bowling. Could Shane Hand repeat his success from last year? Only time will tell. All the favourites easily reached the quarter finals which left for some tantalising matches:

Quarter Final Draw

1. Niall Hand v Calum Cummiskey

2. Jason Hand v Dean McDonagh

3. Shane Hand v Jason Carragher

4. Philip Mackin v Niall Martin

Report on Quarter Finals:

1 Undoubtedly the tie of the round was Niall Hand v Calum Cummiskey. Both players are skip's for the Junior Team and both players have been selected for the Full Men's Team. While both players have phenomenal ability, both play a different type of game. Niall is more a drawing player while Calum is more attack minded. After 4 ends they could not be separated at 4-4. Suddenly Calum pulled away and won by 6, 11-5.

2 Jason and Dean also looked like a tasty fixture but Jason's experience came to fruition winning 11-3, with 2 ends to spare.

3 Shane continued his winning streak by easily beating Jason 11-3.

4 The big surprise of the quarter final was Niall Martin piping Philip Mackin by 1 shot, when Philip needing 3 shots to force an extra end, dropped short with his last bowl and only got 2 shots.

Semi-Final Draw

1 Jason Hand v Calum Cummiskey

2 Shane Hand v Niall Martin

Report on Semi Finals:

1. Jason and Calum were close all the way and after 9 ends could not be separated at 8-8. In the last end it was a case of who could take the jack into the ditch first. Jason went close, grazing the jack, but left a good catcher in the ditch. Calum fired 3 out of 4 bowls and with his last bowl took the jack into the ditch but played with far too much wait and sent the jack to Jason's toucher which put Jason through by the narrowest margin.

2. The other Semi between Shane and Niall was the complete opposite to the first semi final, with Shane cruising to victory 13-2.

This setup a repeat of the 2007 final were Jason beat Shane.
