With many of the Oriel’s top players playing, there was bound to be some fascinating contests and the Oriel’s National Singles certainly didn’t disappoint.

First Round Summery:

The tie of the round was undoubtedly John McMahon and Billy Taaffe. It looked like a mouth-watering tie on paper and after 7 ends there was only 1 shot separating the pair. In the 8th end however, John finally pulled away and eventually won with an end to spare. The surprise of the round came when former winner, Gerry McCabe, was knocked out by Brendan McMahon, after a magnificent game by Brendan. Sean Trainor was involved in a close contest with Andrea Flanagan eventually winning by 2 shots.

In the 2nd round Kevin Conroy had a nail-biting finish against James Sweeney eventually winning in the by 2 shots. Anthony Reel knocked out Diarmuid McMahon and Conor Mackin disposed of Paul Corvan. Paddy Hanlon had the comeback of the day against Stevie Mackin. With 3 ends to go Paddy was 8-2 down but Paddy showed why he reached the final 2010 and picked 3 consecutive 2's and won in an extra end. John McMahon, after knocking out Billy Taaffe, was given another tough draw, this time against the current Champion of Champions Singles holder Jim Fox. Jim continued his phenomenal form, winning by 3 shots.

Quarter Final Summery:

There were some classic contests at this stage, none more so than our two Irish Representatives Kevin Conroy and Paul Duff. Paul raced into an early lead and with 2 ends to go was 9-3 to the good. Kevin put the pressure on Paul by picking up a count of 4 to take the game to 9-7 last end. Paul kept his composure to knock out the 2004 champion and reach the last game of the day. Jim Harmon pulled off a massive surprise by beating Conor Mackin with an end to spare. Anthony Reel continued his good form beating Thomas Gartlan. Gerry Crosby knocked out Shane Hand, with his last bowl to setup a last game against Paul Duff. The best game of the day was without doubt between the 2 most in-form players, in Niall Hand and Jim fox. Jim took an early lead but Niall showed great temperament to fight back and with an end to go was only 1 shot down. Jim showed his class and proved again to everyone that the old Jim Fox is back, by playing a perfect last end to knock out his young club mate..

The closest last game was between Brendan McCabe versus Pat Cunningham and after 10 ends they could not be separated at 11-11. Brendan, with the last bowl, rolled back the years and a delivered great bowl to qualify. In the qualifying game he will face Michael Hand who easily beat Paul Carey. Jim Harmon continued his good run by knocking out Jimmy McMahon and he will now face Paddy Hanlon who beat Paddy Griffin. Sean Trainor continued last year’s form, which saw him qualify from Oriel, to beat Anthony Reel with an end to spare. He will now face Kevin Conroy's conqueror Paul Duff who had a very tight match against Gerry Crosby, eventually winning by the 2 shots. Fra Dillon raced into an early lead against Gareth McMahon after Gareth put a bowl over the fender. Gareth fought back valiantly, however the lead was to great and Fra Dillon progressed. In the last game he will face the in-form Jim Fox. Jim showed great composure throughout the night and the last game was no different beating Carol McMahon with an end to spare.
