Oriels’ National Trips was held in Lordship on the 10th of October 2009 and for anybody in attendance they witnessed a wonderful nights bowling. The holders Kevin Conroy Billy Taaffe and Fra Dillon were split up into to two trips but neither trip disappointed |
.
The first round fixtures threw up very few top clashes apart from Hughie McDonagh against Diarmuid McMahon and it took the last bowl in an extra end to split these trips with Hughie coming out victorious. On paper however, most of the top triples comfortably reached the next round.
Â
| The second round was much different. Former winner Billy Taaffe played John Murnaghan and with Billy playing wonderful bowls knocked out the trip from Cooley quite comfortably in the end. Gerry McCabe, buoyed on from his win the night before in Geraldine’s singles, played the young cubs from Corduff Jason, Niall and Shane Hand. In a fantastic game Gerry just piped them by the odd shot. Hughie was again facing a difficult tie, this time against Michael Hand. Michael’s trip including Jim Fox and Greg Marron hardly missed a shot and in the end ran out easy winners. Kevin's trip was quietly strolling along easily beating Seamus McPharland. |

In the quarter finals Conner Mackin was drawn against Kevin Conroy. This game was nip and tuck all the way till Kevin picked up 3 shots in the third last end to move well ahead. However with Conner 4 down last end he had a chance to play the bowl out to lie 4 but just missed. Paul Duff was drawn against Billy Taaffe and after beating him in Geraldine’s the night before, wanted to continue where he left off. Billy was again playing fantastic bowls but Paul’s crew including Andrew Meegan and his father were on the day just that bit better. Gerry McCabe's trip including Fra Dillon Snr and his father Brendan looked unbeatable when he easily disposed of Seamus Murnaghan. Michael Hand looked anything but and scraped threw his game with Gerry Crosby in an extra end, with Gerry having a chance to win the game.
Â
The last games of the day saw Paul Duff's crew face Kevin Conroy's and Gerry McCabe's trip against Michael Hand's. Paul took an early lead on a very slow mat against Kevin. Kevin tried everything to get back into the game but the harder he tried the worse look he was getting with bowls falling against bias and some very unlucky rubs. That isn’t taking away from Paul’s team who never put a foot wrong in the whole game and in the end ran out easy winners. Gerry, who looked unbeatable earlier on in the night, was in for a rude awakening as Michael's team were relentless. With an end to go were 9-5 to the good and were always in control.
