Halfway through this plate final game things were looking grim for Oriel as they took on Mid Antrim in the All-Ireland plate final in Richhill as it looked like it was was going to be Mid Antrim’s day. Despite being 11 shots behind at one stage, Oriel never gave up and gradually clawed their way back into the game with some fantastic play to win by 5 and claim their 4th plate win.

In the first half it was Mid Antrim who dominated the scoring. On mat 1, Oriel’s Gill Rouiller, Mary O’Hare, Briege Duffy and Anne Murphy were playing well and winning a majority of the ends in their game. However Mid Antrim’s J McLaughlin, L Barkley, L McCombe and A McToal picked up a 4 on the 9th end to get a 9-7 win for Mid Antrim. On mat 2, Mid Antrim’s M Turtle, W Adair, I McCullough and P Peacock played extremely well in their game against Oriel’s Imelda Hanratty, Rachel Brennan, Monina Birch and Geradine Boyle winning 7 ends, including an opening 4 to win 12-4.

At the interval Mid Antrim led 21-11 and looked set for a win. However by the half way mark of the 2nd run of games, Mid Antrim’s lead had been cut to just 2 shots. From this point it was clear where the Plate was going as both Oriel rinks took complete control. Bernie Cunningham, Christina Holmes, Mary Carthy, Claire Corrigan picked up 4 successive 2’s and 5 in all to win for Oriel 11-5 against J Kirk, H Maybin, C McCrea and R Gordon. On mat 2, Oriel’s Emma Colgan, Mary Larney, Lilly Comiskey, Rosie Colgan dominated throughout to win 12-4 over E Gage, E McAuley, A McClure and E McNeill.

Massive congratulations to Oriel for a fantastic victory, and hard luck to a strong Mid Antrim team who just ran out of steam at the end. Their day will definitely come.
